SIP

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a network protocol widely used for IP telephony (VoIP). SIP manages the establishment and termination of real-time communication connections between two or more participants, but is not responsible for the actual data transmission. SIP works in conjunction with other protocols, such as RTP, which define and transmit the session data.
