Alarm

In video surveillance, the term alarm refers to different but related things. An alarm event occurs when a video surveillance product detects a threat. Alarm events have different names for different manufacturers, but the functionality is similar. Alarm events include:

  • Entering or driving through a restricted area (intruder alarm, intrusion detection)
  • Leaving a restricted area (Region Exiting Alarm)
  • Staying in a restricted area for too long (protection against loitering, loitering alarm)
  • Stealing and leaving behind objects (Object Removal and Unattended Baggage Detection)
  • sudden increase in volume beyond normal levels (Audio Exception Detection)

The camera reacts to the triggering event with an automatic follow-up action, the actual alarm. All follow-up actions serve to immediately inform authorized people about the relevant situation so that they can initiate emergency response promptly. Possible follow-up actions are:

  • Acoustic alarm via a siren, announcement via a loudspeaker
  • Visual alarm on a traffic signal system
  • Silent alarm by displaying messages and live images on monitors and mobile devices
  • Notification of a security control center
  • Recording the video stream
