With spring just around the corner and the holiday season approaching, it's time to think about the security of our homes. A recent email I received with the subject line "Holiday plans? Burglars know about it! Is your home well protected?" got me thinking.
It’s an uncomfortable truth: while we look forward to relaxing days on the beach, hiking in the mountains, or exciting city trips, there are others who use this time to break into our homes. Statistics show that the number of burglaries often rises during the holiday season. But how can we protect our homes and slam the door in the face of uninvited guests?
1. Inform your neighbors
An age-old and always effective method is to let trusted neighbors or friends know when you’re going on vacation. They can regularly check on your home, empty the mailbox, and perhaps even create the impression that someone is home. A busy mailbox and occasionally lit rooms are good deterrents.
2. Use security technology
Modern security systems today offer a wide range of options to protect your home. From alarm systems to surveillance cameras and smart locks – the choices are vast. All of these technologies can not only deter burglars but also give you peace of mind while you are hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away at a distant holiday destination.
3. Lighting control
A simple but effective method is to use lighting controls. Timers for lamps, smart plugs, or even smart bulbs that can be controlled from your smartphone create the impression that someone is home. Suddenly lit rooms when no one is there will certainly discourage potential burglars.
4. Avoid announcing vacations on social media
In the excitement of an upcoming trip, it’s tempting to share photos and posts on social media. But remember: the internet never forgets. Publicly announcing your absence practically invites burglars to put your home on “the list.” It’s better to wait until you are back home.
The safety of our homes should always come first, especially during times when we want to relax and unwind. With a few simple precautions, we can help ensure that our holiday isn’t disrupted by uninvited guests.
Writing this blog post has shown me how important it is to keep security in mind even during enjoyable events like a vacation. It’s an investment in our well-being and protects not only our property but also our memories and moments of relaxation. So, before you pack your bags, consider these simple tips to protect your home and enjoy a worry-free trip.
We wish you a safe and relaxing holiday season!
